This program is geared to inform and educate the student about all aspects of San Diego's maritime employment opportunities, the history of the port, and its unique characteristics. Program Mission: To develop future American mariners with first-rate work place skills, values, and ethics. To
present a more successful "work ready" employee for entry level
positions within the US Flag Merchant Marine and supporting waterborne
commerce careers. Program Length: 6-12 weeks Program Content: Hands on training Deck seamanship skills Linehandling,marlinspike seamanship, cordage Knowledge of basic engineering systems Safety aboard ship Shipboard sanitation skills training Environmental caretaking with G.E.T.T. CLEAN-Green Education Training and Technologies Proper conduct aboard ship Subjects: Safety orientation Basic Shipyard Skills Orientation Basic Deckhands Training aboard CMS training vessels Surface prepping and coating Fundamentals in Basic Diesel Engine Operation Forklift Operation Basic Rigging and Crane Service Lead based paint/asbestos awareness STCW Basic Training 5 day class Respirator awareness and workplace use Team work, leadership, behavior skills Resume building Interview techniques, job searching/coaching skills Merchant Mariner document application assistance USCG physical and drug test Placement assistance Program Objectives:
Upon successful completion, student will receive certificate of
completion from CMS. Skills and proficiencies from above curriculum
will be included in certificate. Students receiving certificate will
have obvious advantages in job search. Student will have sold basic
entry level qualifications that industry is looking for. Students can
choose from jobs ashore or jobs afloat and being employment/career.
Successful student will receive job placement assistance including
resume writing and interview skills. Student Proficiencies:
Development of a successful entry level shipmate when reporting aboard
ship, with the ability to commence duties immediately with the basic
